Damiana is a shrub plant that belongs to the saffron mallow genus (turnera diffusa). Its natural range extends from southern North America to Argentina. Preferably, damiana thrives in dry, rocky locations - for example on cliffs, on limestones or in mixed forests at altitudes between 500 metres and 1950 metres. Damiana has also been used as a tobacco substitute in Mexico for a long time.
